Red tide Bloom hits Penang

Image
GEORGE TOWN : Streaks of pink have appeared in the sea off Teluk Bahang since the weekend, arousing the curiosity of beachgoers. As of this afternoon, the pink hue is still visible in some parts. Local fishermen have expressed concerns and lamented on the death of thousands of fishes as a result of the situation, about 1 km from Muha Head until the coast off Teluk Bahang. Teluk Bahang Fishermen's Association chairman Johari Mohamad said they came across the streaks of pink about two days ago, with many dead fishes on the surface. "As a result, the sea condition was also not as nice as always. We are worried if this situation prolongs, more fish may end up dead," he said. Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Universiti Sains Malaysia, director Profesor Datuk Dr Aileen Tan Shau Hwai described the situation as the red tide bloom. She said a similar incident happened in April during the hot spell (with some rains that brought the nutrients from land to the ocean)...

TRAWLING FOR NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Image
FOR generations, veteran fisherman Idris Ismail and his family have relied on traditional methods and small boats to earn a living near Pulau Kendi, a rocky isle 4km southwest of Penang island. The 68-year-old hopes the Penang South Island (PSI) reclamation project will improve the living standards of fishermen in the vicinity. Three of his seven children are also fishermen. Idris, of Teluk Kumbar, said the next generation of fishermen should embrace development if they intend to remain in the fishing industry. “With the growing population, there is a need to develop the industry. “It needs to be modernised with improved technology and advanced methods. “Although I am too old for it, my children are ready to adopt new approaches.” He said they were already using technology such as global positioning systems (GPS) and motors to assist in retrieving nets. The project has been scaled down to one island, from the initial three. “We believe with the PSI project, th...

'We do not need a Fantasy Island', NGOs tell Gamuda

Image
GEORGE TOWN : Three leading non-governmental organisations (NGO) say Gamuda Bhd's defence of its Penang South Island (PSI) project is self-serving and unsustainable. Gamuda is the majority shareholder of the SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd undertaking the PSI works. Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) president Mohideen Abdul Kader), Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) president Meenakshi Raman and Penang Forum's Khoo Salma Nasution said Gamuda had a vested interest in the mega reclamation project, expecting to make millions, perhaps billions, of profit. "Therefore, its claims of the project benefitting the public must be taken with a pinch of salt," they said in a joint statement today. Gamuda said the recent EIA approval for PSI was secured following a stringent and professional process starting in 2021 including two public displays to gather public feedback and a series of technical review meetings. It said the process involved subject matter experts and specialist stud...
